Hotel Kumala Pantai, Bali, Indonesia

Date of stay: 22~26 Oct'15
Duration: 4 nights
Booking agent: Agoda
Paid: SGD1142.64 (for 3 deluxe rooms, for 4 nights)
Breakfast: International
Wifi: Only at the (Italian Restaurant) - you gotta ask them for password

It was a trip for my old folks. Only upon booking did I realise this hotel has no lift. So there was a problem for my aging folks. Dropped them an email and received almost an immediate reply that they could place us at the lowest of the building, at Level 1. Ground floor is for Junior Suite, so that's out of the question. And despite the worry they do not keep to their words (coz I booked under Agoda), we were given Level 1 for all three rooms. And the staffs were very pro-active in helping us with our luggages.

Strangely, I hardly seen any Asian guests in the hotel throughout the 4 nights. We were not sure why this hotel is not popular among the Asians.

As the hotel looks pretty very "gardenish", I didn't know how to capture nice photos. The hotel is just a street away from the beach. A good garden walk from the front of the hotel to the back of the hotel where the Italian restaurant is. Do not expect a quiet beach. It is a crowded beach with stalls and all.

There is a spa in the hotel. My sis and mom went for massage. Price was reasonable but service was nothing to shout of.

The entrance at night

Lobby overview

Reception

The bed

The balcony at Level 1 we enjoyed thoroughly due to the convenience
to see my parents and my sis

Pool 1 - quite pretty, but it can be pretty deep.
I saw a 1.8m somewhere in the middle.
The little ones played at the baby pool on the left side mainly.

Pool 2
Pretty pathetic. The pool is not clean. The hotel was chopping off some trees.
Leaves, barks dropped into the pool.
The pool looks deep too, and no proper indication of the depth.

Balinese Dance on Thursday evening

Different performances every evening
7.30-8.30pm and 8.30-9.30pm
Restaurant:
It's an Italian Restaurant where you have your breakfast and your fix for wifi connection with the world. They serve pretty good food. They have different performance every evening and it was full house the 3 nights we dined there. Recommend to be seated outside by 6pm if you wish to get a nice seat. Try not to take the tables inside, the service can be quite disappointing.

Wifi:
I've read that it's not worth to purchase the wifi there as the network is really bad. So, just go to the restaurant for your fix.

Breakfast:
They have variety of local delights, toast and bread, muesli/oats/cereals, choices of juice, fruits, yogurts. But I ate lesser and lesser each day.

Mosquitoes:
You can literally see them flying towards you in delight. One good advice: bathe in your repellant.

PS: My harsh critics may be because of the comparison with our experience in Grand Aston Bali.

Grand Aston Bali, Indonesia

Date of stay: 2nd ~ 6th Dec'13
Duration: 4 nights
Booking agent: Direct
Paid: U$188 per night
Wifi: Free (strong signals at public area like lobby, lounge, restaurants but very weak in the room)
Breakfast: International

We had our honeymoon in Aston Bali Resort a month shy of 5 years ago. We had a good time, and enjoyed ourselves. So much that hubby kept reminiscing the club sandwich we had throughout the 5 years.

We made a pact then, that we would be back, for our 5th anniversary, with our children. (Read then: not sure if we wanted any, or how many)

We were both looking forward to the re-visit. We made the flights and hotel reservations 4 months earlier, we would bring our son who was turning 3 yo.

Just days before our trip, I made a last minute check on the website. To be surprised that they changed their name to Grand Aston Bali instead. I had to check and confirm twice, in case I got the wrong resort name. But there it was. Changed. A more pleasant surprise was, there would be a kids room with babysitting service! Gosh, we were sure we would have a good time!

Upon arrival.. its outlook is astonishing

At night

Its a beauty isn't it?

Beautiful traditional music at the lobby upon arrival

Welcome drinks for us by super friendly staffs

Guest Relation Officer showed us our upgraded suite - as the suite I asked for (the one we had our honeymoon) was not available as it was under renovation

The spacious hall

Cum dining area

Looking towards the door

There was an extra toilet at the foyer

Coffee maker at pantry

Balcony

Looking over to the pool and sea!

The super king bed!

Wardrobe and looking over to the bathroom

Dresser and the in-room TV

The huge bath tub - our son enjoyed it very much

It was very cosy

Shower room

Toiletries

4 bottles of water everyday

A beach bag for our use

View from the beach

Beautiful private beach

Benches near the pool

Gym

Breakfast area

The ever so beautiful pool - we went into it everyday

Beautiful view and weather

The 4-5 months old Kids Club!

Activity chart

The bedroom - cosy enough for our son to sleep in there for 2 hours and more

Looking into the club

Table soccer! - remind me of good old school days

Unfortunately the TV was playing songs most of the times

It could get a little too sunny with this kind of roof - but it's air-conditioned

Spacious play area

Like a glass-house

Pinky table and chairs

The picture says it all

The Game Room

In the Toilet

Isn't it cute?

We paid for pizza making class

Little thoughtful things from the resort:

Birthday cake for our son who turned 3 on the 2nd day

Free shuttle to Kuta town

Sweet choc every night

So you ask me what's the difference 5 years on?

Flower arrangement.. it's nicer now right?

The shape of the cake? - Although I secretly wished they put Happy Anniversary than Congratulations

The club sandwich then and now - apparently it doesn't look and taste as nice as 5 years ago.. boohoo!

What we love most:
1) very friendly staffs - from front desk to kitchen including chef
2) thoughtful arrangements - flower, cake, speeches
3) feeling important as a customer - invitation to VIP cocktail party by the Mgmt and their GM, Mr Ian Cameron asked for feedback, talking to each VIP
4) Very clean private beach
5) beautiful pool
6) wonderful spa
7) wonderful food

What we think lacking:
1) variety of food - although there were Italian and local, western food in the resort, we still felt something missing, we had to cross the street to a Japanese restaurant 3 of the 4 nights we were there.
2) White fresh towels - the towels look a little yellowish
3) our son enjoyed the pizza making, but if they could make a child friendly platform for the kids, that would have perfect!
